24 CODY

I stood at the back gate of the house watching Riley at the end of the pier. I had to tell her what I’d found out. I knew in my gut if I told her about Tempany, she would understand. Adam and Riley’s dad set off fireworks and I stood in amongst the ti-trees and the marram grass and waited.

I waited until Adam went home and Riley’s dad staggered past me up the stairs until nobody was around but Riley. She loitered at the end of the pier, under the tall light at the end. I stepped out of the shrubs, scratching the itches that I hadn’t dared move for. I walked slowly down to the end of the pier to speak with her. She heard my footsteps approaching and looked up with dread. ‘Whatever you’re going to do…just do it. Get it over with.’

‘What makes you think I’m going to do something?’ I asked, coming into the light. She let out a sigh of relief when she saw my face.

‘Cody, oh my God. You scared me.’ Her face relaxed but then her mouth tightened and she looked behind me. ‘I thought you went home.’

‘No,’ I grinned. ‘I just waited for you to be alone.’

She raised an eyebrow at me before she asked, ‘What do you want, Cody?’

‘Just to talk.’

‘It’s kind of late.’

‘Stay.’ I lowered my voice and spread my fingers as if calming to a wild animal. ‘I have to tell you something.’

The whites of her eyes shone in the dark under the dull orange light above us. She crossed her arms and waited. I asked, ‘Do you know what Tempany is into?’

Her arms dropped to her side and she stamped her foot. ‘Just tell me, Cody.’

‘She’s a drug dealer,’ I announced.

Riley’s hand slapped my chest and pushed me. I stumbled back a few steps.

‘Don’t say things like that in public. People could hear you!’ She leant against a pole and rubbed her eyes and before she snapped, ‘What do you mean anyway – Tempany’s a drug dealer?’

‘She deals cocaine.’

‘No, no. You’ve got it wrong.’ She sighed. ‘She takes cocaine. She’s not a dealing it.’

‘Yeah, she does,’ I said with a nod. ‘I think your dad does, too, doesn’t he?’ I gestured to the lavish boat moored behind us. ‘So, this is why my brother left me, huh.’

She shook her head slowly. ‘I’m sorry, Cody. I can’t tell you anything.’

I slumped down on the edge of the pier and she came to sit next to me. ‘So…that’s it. Adam’s a drug dealer.’

‘He’s not a dealer.’ Riley grabbed my hand and placed it in her lap. ‘It’s my dad. He’s the drug dealer. He’s…not a good person, Cody. But your brother is.’

I looked up into her face. ‘Did your mum find out something about your dad?’

She nodded.

‘Do you think he killed her?’ I whispered.

Her eyes went to the house and she swallowed before she nodded again.

I hissed, ‘We have to get you out of here.’

She held up her hand to stop me as I went to get up.
